Doomscrolling Diaries

Image
Hi, my name is Anna Djikas and I suffer from phone addiction. I am not in denial but am rather painfully aware of this addiction. I try to tell myself that I am using my phone with a purpose like staying connected with friends that did not live in the same state as myself or finding new healthy dinner recipes but often this is not entirely true. I shamefully doomscroll getting caught up in all the new trends and sounds of TikTok and then before I know it 30 minutes have gone by of me staring at my phone laughing rather than doing something productive.  Image Source: Reddit  When teaching my AP Seminar students about perspectives and stakeholders, I start with a mini lesson that asks students to reflect on if they believe they are addicted to their phone. They then take a quiz from the New York Time's that determines if they are in love with their phone. They are then asked if their perspective has changed in the end. Many start with denial that they are in love with their ph...

Systems Reflective Post

My journey is systems has been very rewarding. I have been challenged to think about technology and the underlining elements that it takes to create technology in a way I have never thought about before. I would have not considered myself a tech-savy teacher but through this course I feel like I have an immensely deeper understanding of technology and even have a few ideas of how to bring this understanding into my classroom. I learned how to create a Microsoft list which I could see as being an extremely useful tool in my AP Seminar class for both my students and myself. From keeping track of who has checked out a library book or a book from my personal library to tracking student progress on a longer project, this list can be viewed by all parties. Students can see where they are in the process in comparison to their peers and when deadlines are approaching. I can quickly update the status of students so I can keep track of all their information in one spot. I would love to lear...

The Media Maze

Image
Today, one of my AP Seminar students presented their individual multimedia presentation on the media effect of historical perception. She talked about collective memory and how media frames events and distorts what really happened. Smith's "Master the Media" talks about how the purpose of mass media is to make money which my student did a great job of highlighting in her presentation by talking about how history is often distorted to make the narrative more engaging for the audience. With attention spans rapidly declining (thanks TikTok!), the media has to find ways to keep the audience in engaged in order to keep their ratings up even if this means fabricating a piece of the story thus altering history and how we remember it. When taking the Easiest Quiz of All Time , this idea of collective memories was very present. I had thought I knew all the right answers but really I was believing the false truth the entire time due to what the media and other people have largely ...

Safety on Digital Playgrounds

Image
When my cousin was 5 years old, he posted his first viral TikTok video. He was playing on my aunt's phone and was recording different ornaments on their Christmas tree. He used a "viral" sound and uploaded this meaningless and horrible quality video to TikTok. His video received thousands of views. I have no idea what type of algorithm you had to be on to have my 5 year old cousin's videography pop up on your feed but whatever he did seemed to work! Luckily, his face was not in the video but he certainly was not old enough to be publicly posting on any social media platforms.  Image Source: Pinterest Personally, I do not think there will ever be a law implemented that will completely protect children from the dangers of the internet. The internet evolves too quickly with people who know how to use it all too well. It would be extremely difficult to have any sort of legislation that could keep up with this. In this introduction video that describes the Children's I...

Phone ALWAYS eats first

Image
Today, I watched a TikTok where a young woman was talking about how she filed taxes for a dog that made $20,000 on Tiktok this past year and we must be living in some kind of simulation for this to be true. This had me thinking about all the famous pets whose usernames I could recall off the top of my head... and the truth is that I know way too many. Duke the golden, Doug the pug, Goose, these are just a few of my favorite dog influencers. Should these dog influencers be entitled to a portion of their earnings? Should it be mandatory that these earnings be spent on grooming appointments, the highest quality of food, and the best toys for these dogs since they earned it? All of these questions should be ridiculous but they could become legitimate questions.  Families who post their children online have the same dilemma. What portions go to their children that have helped make their posts successful? I was shocked to read that JB Pritzker passed a law in 2023 that children un...
